You might think that something you do to treat the sinuses has nothing to do with the hormones, but then there’s Nasya!
Here’s a technique that clears stuffy sinuses, and is meanwhile one of my most undiscovered tips to balance hormones.
Nasya (or, applying herbal oil or ghee into the sinuses via nose drops) is extremely effective at keeping the sinuses cleared out and mucus membranes of the nose, sinuses and throat.
In my opinion, Nasya is really under-used!
Now, Nasya can have 2 actions. Either it can 1) liquify and clear the sinuses, or it can 2) moisten dry sinuses and strengthen the nerves and facial skin (think: fewer wrinkles!).
Let’s look at each fo the 2 actions.
Liquifying the mucus The action needed to clear stubborn, stuck mucus high in the sinuses, or chronic post-nasal drip is to liquify and clear. To liquify, Ayurveda uses a few drops of oil cooked with special herbs to mildly irritate the mucus membranes, causing them to liquify mucus and drain. Using oil is friendly to the mucus membranes, unlike salt water like one uses in Neti Pot nasal flushing.
Moistening & Strengthening Here’s where the effect of balancing hormones really kicks in. With the right oil for nose drops, you can strengthen the delicate mucus membranes and nearby nerves (and brain!) against stress and fatigue. This gives a clear signal the local glands like the pituitary and pineal that control hormone output.
Again, oil is really friendly to sensitive mucus membranes like inside your sinuses. So when you apply milder oils for moistening & strengthening, it rehydrates the whole face (including wrinkle-prone skin) and all the sensory organs, in addition to giving the sinuses and local nerves extra resilience. So if you want an anti-wrinkle treatment, look no further.
Nasya will even indirectly strengthen the eyes. Your eyes become bright and shiny immediately after applying oil in the nose!
Nasya is super important to do this time of year to prevent Spring allergies, too. Timing is important.
Have I convinced you of how useful this technique is? ????????????
Daily Nasya is recommended in the morning on an empty stomach – a bit more gentle effect than at the clinic. It can take some getting used to before you have the confidence to do it at home, so in the treatment at the office, I teach clients step-by-step how to continue.
Book a Head Massage & Nasya series so you can learn to do it at home
btw, if you’re not local to Amsterdam, no problem just schedule an online appointment and I’ll get you set up for home use and recommend a formulation specific for your needs.
What to expect in a Nasya clinic treatment:
We’ll begin with a luxurious warm herbal oil massage of the head and shoulders to open the channels of the head, including pressure to the marma points of the head. These energy centers optimize every action of the body, increase awareness and enable deep relaxation. Once the head and neck are prepared, nose drops of medicated oil selected for your individual health needs are.
